Shopping & Duty-Free in Sanya
China's largest duty-free mall, night markets for dried mango and pearls, and how the ¥100,000 offshore tax-free quota works.
Sanya International Duty-Free Mall (CDF)
Haitang Bay's CDF is the world's largest duty-free complex. Foreigners and mainlanders alike can shop ¥100,000 of tax-free goods per person per year. Bring your passport; you pick up purchases at the airport or ferry on departure.
Night markets
The First Market (第一市场) in downtown sells fresh seafood you can take to a nearby restaurant to cook. Yingming Night Market has souvenirs, dried mango, coconut products and pearls — bargain hard.
What to buy
Coconut carvings, Hainan pearls (buy from licensed shops, not beach vendors), dried tropical fruit, and coconut candy. Counterfeit pearls are common — ask for a certificate.
Bargaining
Night markets expect haggling; start at 40% of the asking price and meet around 60%. Malls and CDF have fixed prices.
Locals' Tip
Go to CDF on a weekday morning — weekends and holidays are packed with tour groups.
