Getting To & Around Sanya
High-speed rail across Hainan, airport transfers, and the bus + DiDi mix that connects all four bays without renting a car.
Arriving by air or rail
Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) is 15 km west of downtown — a fixed-fare taxi is about ¥40 and 20 minutes, or take the shuttle bus to Sanya Bay. Many travelers fly into Haikou (HAK) and ride the Hainan Western Ring high-speed train (1.5–2 hours, ¥80–150) for cheaper flights and a scenic coast run.
Moving between the bays
Sanya's four resort bays — Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay — string along 40 km of coast. Public buses (¥2–10) connect them but are slow. DiDi works everywhere and a bay-to-bay ride is ¥30–80. Between Yalong and Haitang, the coastal highway is a 25-minute drive.
Taxis & ride-hailing
Taxis are metered but few drivers speak English. Use DiDi (Alipay or WeChat Pay) and set the destination in-app — the map pin removes the language barrier. Airport taxi touts quote ¥100+ to the bays; ignore them and order DiDi.
Driving & rentals
Self-driving is possible with a valid license (China does not recognize foreign licenses — you need a temporary Chinese license). E-bikes are everywhere and rentable by the day; stick to the bike lanes.
Locals' Tip
The high-speed rail from Haikou is often cheaper than flying into Sanya direct — and the coastal views are worth it.
