Gateway to Dali & Lijiang

How to use Kunming as a launchpad — high-speed rail to Dali in 2 hours, Lijiang in 3.5, and what to eat first.

Why Kunming

Kunming is the launchpad for Yunnan's big three — Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La — all reachable by high-speed rail from Kunming South station.

The trains

  • Kunming → Dali: ~2 hours, ¥140-180
  • Kunming → Lijiang: ~3.5 hours (or change at Dali)
  • Book 2-3 days ahead in peak season; passport required at booking

Eat first

Before you leave Kunming, eat crossing-the-bridge noodles (过桥米线) at Jianxinxin (建新园) — the original 1906 recipe, served as a ritual: hot broth, raw ingredients, you cook them at the table.

Altitude

Lijiang's old town sits at 2,400 m. Walk slowly the first day, drink water, skip the beer.
