Getting To & Around Harbin
Sub-zero arrivals, the metro to the Ice Festival, and why you dress for the taxi wait, not the ride.
Arriving
Harbin Taiping Airport (HRB) is 40 km from the city — an hour by airport bus (¥20) or DiDi (¥120). High-speed rail connects Harbin to Beijing (5 hours) and Dalian (4 hours).
Getting around
Harbin's metro (Lines 1, 2, 3) covers the center, the river and the Ice Festival site. The old town (Central Street, Sophia Church) is walkable even in winter — the sidewalks are heated in places.
Taxis & ride-hailing
DiDi works; taxis are metered. In January, wait times spike — order 10 minutes before you need to leave. Few drivers speak English.
Winter travel
Buses run on snow tires; the metro is the most reliable option. Dress for the platform wait (–20°C), not the heated carriage.
Locals' Tip
Take the metro to the Ice Festival — taxis queue for an hour at closing time and the metro skips the line.
