Forbidden City: the dawn entry
How to time the world's largest palace complex so you walk the marble courtyards ahead of the tour-bus tide.
Why go early
The Forbidden City sees up to 80,000 visitors a day. The only way to experience its marble courtyards as the emperors did — quietly — is to be in the first wave at 8:30am.
Booking
- Tickets are online only, released seven days ahead at 8:00pm Beijing time
- Bring the passport you booked with — it is your ticket
- The 8:30am slot sells out fastest; set a reminder
The route
Enter via the Meridian Gate (午门) and walk the central axis: Hall of Supreme Harmony → Inner Court → Imperial Garden. Exit through the north gate, which drops you at the top of Jingshan Park for the classic skyline view.
Timing
Budget 3-4 hours minimum. The light is softest in the first 90 minutes.
Locals' Tip
Book the 8:30am slot exactly — the first 2,000 visitors get a near-empty Meridian Gate and the great halls to themselves.
